Specialty Coating Systems (SCS) is the world leader in Parylene conformal coating technologies, services and equipment with nearly 40 years of experience coating components and devices including circuit boards, sensors, fuel cells, MEMS, LEDs and other critical components in the automotive, electronics, military and medical industries.

For years, automotive manufacturers have relied on conformal coatings to protect components from corrosive fluids, chemicals, and temperature extremes.  However, some conformal coating formulations fail because of shortened performance life due to the high temperatures found in today’s engine compartments – and, since the failure of just one component could mean the failure of an entire system, these failures are expensive warranty issues for automotive manufacturers.

Parylene is an ultra-thin, inert, pinhole-free conformal coating that is applied in a room temperature, vapor phase deposition process.  Generic forms of Parylene – Parylenes N, C and D – have been used in the automotive industry for years because the polymer conformal coatings provide excellent chemical, moisture and dielectric barrier protection.

To address the increasing temperatures in today’s automotive designs, Specialty Coating Systems engineered Parylene HT®, which offers unmatched protection in high temperature environments (up to 350°C long-term, 450°C short-term).  The coating also provides excellent dielectric protection and superior UV stability.

Adhesion of any coating to its substrate is critical to ensure the desired effectiveness of the coating. As new materials are introduced into the industry, and as operating environments become more extreme, good adhesion can become a bit challenging to achieve. SCS recently introduced AdPro Plus®, an advanced adhesion technology that not only withstands harsh environments, but increases the adhesion of Parylene coatings to difficult metallic and polymeric substrates, such as titanium, stainless steel, gold, cobalt chromium, solder and polycarbonate, to name only a few.

For more information about how Parylene conformal coatings can provide harsh environment protection for your automotive components, thus increasing the trouble-free life of key automotive technologies, contact SCS.
